See their passions in action

The work Civic Leadership Foundation students put in creates real change in their communities and the world. Below are just a few of the ways students have found their voice and leadership skills to turn their passions into purpose and purpose into results.

A better world starts with a healthier planet

CLF students followed their passions for biology and conservation to a nearby creek where they found that 90% of the organisms on its banks were invasive. They took their college-level research to the local government, securing support from the city council to start restoration of the creek’s native ecology.

Turning the tables on gangs

Eric, a CLF student and lover of all things music saw the threat that gangs in his neighborhood posed to his classmates. He turned that passion into an afterschool program where students listened to tunes, mixed beats and even raised funds to buy equipment—keeping the music on and the kids off the street.

Stressing the importance of mental health

After being hospitalized for her own mental illness, Taylor was inspired to turn her own struggles into a source of comfort and strength for her classmates battling depression. Her passion led to a two-day mental health retreat with guest speakers, reflection, journaling, student resources and more.

Making Prehistoric history

After discovering that the Suciasuarus was the only dinosaur ever discovered in the state of Washington, CLF students decided they wanted this lesser-known dinosaur to have its official place in history. So they brought a bill to have it named the state’s official dinosaur in front of the state legislature and in 2023 the governor signed it into law.

Building skills that help build lives

Just as profound as the results CLF students create out in the world are the changes that happen within each young person. CLF has partnered with more than 40 partner schools and youth organizations helping 24,000+ students improve critical social and emotional skills, ones that will benefit them throughout their lives.

CLF surveys have shown significant increases in:

  • Problem Solving

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Self Management

  • Civic Engagement

  • Leadership

  • Teamwork & Cooperation
