Inspiring the Next Generation to Steer their Own Path - Erica Trejo

Erica Trejo - Founder of Sail Her Dreams

We recently welcomed Erica Trejo to Lawndale Community Academy to engage with our youth and share her inspiring journey. Erica is the founder of Sail Her Dreams, a program that empowers girls ages 10–18 to build confidence, resilience, and leadership skills through a week-long sailing adventure. She’s also a U.S. Coast Guard–licensed captain and owner of Great Lakes Sailing, a Chicago-based sailing school.

During her visit, Erica led a fun, hands-on sailing activity where students designed colorful paper sails and tested them on mini foam boats. The classroom buzzed with energy and creativity as students experimented, adjusted their designs, and celebrated each other’s successes.

Beyond the activity, Erica spoke about her own journey and the importance of courage, curiosity, and perseverance—reminding students that even when the wind shifts, they have the power to steer their own course. Her visit left our youth feeling inspired and ready to chase their dreams, both in and outside the classroom.
